Our work with schools introduces students to live theatre, brings young characters from classic plays to life and connects primary and post-primary schools to the National Theatre of Ireland.

Plays for Schools

We create plays for young people and perform them in schools, libraries and arts centres all over Ireland and internationally. With pre and post-show workshops and online learning materials, we bring classic Irish plays into the heart of the classroom. Our shows have been seen by more than 24,000 young people… so far! If you would like to find out more about our school project or any of the content below, please contact phil.kingston@abbeytheatre.ie

In Real Life

This autumn we are returning to the classroom with In Real Life based on the comedy Spreading the News by Augusta Gregory. This play is a contemporary drama exploring social media and identity in the classroom. It uses Lady Gregory’s hilarious take on the dangers of rumour and pompous authority to examine how modern friendships can be threatened by careless communication and clueless adults.  For more information and to book your school in for a performance, please see here.

Theatre Making & Citizenship

Theatre Making and Citizenship is designed for Junior Cert level. Developed by artist Sarah FitzGibbon in collaboration with teacher Maire O’Higgins of Larkin Community College in Dublin, this 100-hour course gives young citizens an opportunity to explore social issues through drama and theatre. By connecting Civil Social and Political Education work with a variety of practical theatre skills the students learn to see the importance of the arts in the life of their communities. Their engagement is supported by visits to plays and an extensive workbook of lesson plans and teacher’s resources.
