Abbey Theatre New Work Department Workshop
Writers' Workshops - So Where Do I Start?
29 April 2023
Booking Information
Date: Saturday, 29th April
Location: Lyric Theatre, Belfast
Time: 10:30am to 1:00pm
Whenever we begin writing a story, we’re inevitably making choices about how it’s going to end.
As part of our nationwide tour of Tartuffe, the Abbey New Work Department will facilitate a writing workshop in Belfast that explores the relationship between beginnings and endings in plays. How can writers effectively set in motion the actions that bring about an ending to a play that’s both surprising and inevitable to an audience? And what are the most skilful ways to kick off a play that hooks an audience’s attention from start to finish?
These workshops will be interactive information sessions about the Abbey’s New Work Department and our work with new plays, paired with practical ‘on your feet’ exercises that focus on strengthening and deepening how a playwright can write a beginning to their play that sparks the imagination of an audience.
This is a workshop designed primarily for writers based in and around Belfast who have not yet written a full-length play but are looking for an opportunity to get started. We would also love to hear from writers from other genres who haven’t written a play but have always wanted to start.
The workshop will be held at the Lyric Theatre, Belfast, on Saturday, 29th April, 10:30am to 1:00pm. You can sign up for the workshops by emailing us the new.work@abbeytheatre.ie. Once you’ve emailed, we will be back in touch to confirm your slot. We look forward to hearing from you!
